A woodpecker clings to the
window screen

tap tap tap tap tap

again and again
coming up empty.

I want to tell her
That’s vinyl siding, dear. Go
find something real.

but I don’t.

Tap tap tap tap tap

Because we all have to 
figure it out
for ourselves
