a poem
A smiling baby in a portable carseat
caught my eye.
I stopped to look at her.
Her mom said
she’s a big smiler
so I expected more of the same.
But instead
the baby fixed her gaze on me
and her smile withdrew.
Steady, unblinking
she regarded me.
No smile. Not a flicker.
I was transfixed.
Warm tears, why?
kept rolling down my cheeks.
I blathered
to her mother
It goes so fast… how can it be… were mine ever that young…
I knew my lame excuse
sounded hollow.
What I wanted to say was
Thank you for the cleansing gaze of your baby.
I have looked into the eyes of divinity
And now I remember who I am.
In retrospect
it’s probably good
I didn’t say that.
