a poem
When we said goodbye
for the last time
I drank in every line of your splendid face
to imprint you forever behind my lids.
Now, I shutter my eyes and scan the void:
you’re gone, no trace
of your smile, or your hair as it softened behind your ear,
nothing ordinary, nothing
luminous, nothing at all.
I give up.
I look up.
I drown in night sky brilliance
where every star vanishes
from my direct gaze…
Of course.
For your light to appear again
I must look to the side,
see not with the eyes
but with the heart, for
you are not of this earth, my love.
You never were.
