It storms

When Truth Reigns

Truth
begins as a single
raindrop
released from the heavens,
a single volunteer sent
to pelt sidewalk.

It explodes into mist,
unheard,
or sizzles on blacktop,
unseen,
a casualty of courageous singularity.

More truths follow,
randomly,
but not random, god knows,
free falling to splash a similar fate,
still too few
to find willing earth,
still too few
for most to notice.

How many raindrops
must take the plunge
for you to hold out your hand
it’s raining
and quicken your pace, reckoning
I can outrun this
just as one drop finally soaks into
welcome ground:
no one outruns truth.

So many prescient bones have ached
before eyes beheld
the storm gathering,
rolling across darkened lowlands;

so many hearts have yearned
for truth to saturate the
parched landscape
and all who walk it,

drenching the slickers,
the impermeables,
all that intends to protect.

Nothing protects
when truth becomes a flood;
umbrellas sail away, useless,
sopping clothes weigh heavy,
shoes squish and encumber passage
through instant rivers that now surge
over cobblestones—
a rushing torrent,
impossible to ignore.

When truth reigns,
and it always does,
we will all cast off our clothes,
freeing ourselves
from drowning deception,
to swim naked
in the water
that cannot lie.
